Mission

About my mission:

My goal for this blog is to learn how to live sustainably (i.e. making as little impact on the earth as possible), eat healthy, and save money.  It's not going to happen in a day - I will need to learn to balance my time with my resources and get creative in order to make this happen!

Why am I doing this?  Well, I'm BROKE!  I hate the fact that big business is almost entirely in control of the food industry in America (and beyond), especially for people like me whose funds are low.  I want to make healthy choices for my body AND for my planet.

My situation is not dire - I am lucky to have a good education and support from family and friends.  However, I've spent a long time studying the trends of urban poverty, and the correlation between low income and food-related diseases and health problems is unbelievable.  If we can't get healthy and physically motivated, we can't achieve the kinds of successes needed to move out of poverty.  A McDiet is NOT a necessary lifestyle when eating on a severely restricted budget!!!

Want to get educated?  Check out The Omnivore's Dilemma (book) and Food, Inc. (documentary) to get started.

Who am I?
I'm a stage manager and music-lover (as well as freelance manager) who works in the children's music industry.  I graduated from Fordham University in 2009 with a degree in theatre (stage management).  I live in Manhattan in a cheap apartment that I was extraordinarily lucky to find.  I have a sister who is in law school and a brother in undergrad.  I grew up in Pennsylvania, where I had absolutely no awareness of the food industry issues and ate a hell of a lot of crap before I realized it wasn't doing me any good.

My boyfriend, Mike, is the lead singer of another children's band (The Dirty Sock Funtime Band).  Mike is almost entirely gluten- and dairy-free, and is extremely health-conscious.  We cook together most nights (he lives in Hell's Kitchen, and I stay with him often), so I've had to adapt to his habits while still making meals that suit my desires (I'm kind of a pasta-addict).

We have a cat named Lenny.
